Connecticut Real Estate License Requirements: Step-by-Step
Everything you need to get your Connecticut real estate salesperson license — education, exam, application, and renewal requirements.
Getting your Connecticut real estate salesperson license involves several steps managed by the Connecticut Real Estate Commission (CREC) under the Department of Consumer Protection. Here's the complete process.
Step 1: Meet Eligibility Requirements
To apply for a Connecticut salesperson license, you must: - Be at least 18 years old - Have a high school diploma or equivalent - Be a person of good moral character - Not have a disqualifying criminal conviction (CREC reviews on a case-by-case basis)
Connecticut does not require U.S. citizenship or state residency.
Step 2: Complete 60 Hours of Pre-License Education
Enroll in and complete a CREC-approved 60-hour real estate principles course. This must be completed at an approved Connecticut real estate school.
The course covers: - Real estate principles and practice - Connecticut real estate law - Agency, contracts, and disclosures - Real estate finance and math
Step 3: Pass the Connecticut PSI Exam
After completing pre-license education, schedule your exam through PSI (the exam administrator for Connecticut).
Exam details: - 80 national questions + 40 state questions = 120 total - 3.5-hour time limit - Passing score: 70% (84/120) - Both sections must be passed — if you pass one and fail the other, you retake only the failed section - Exam fee: approximately $85 (check PSI for current pricing)
Scheduling: Visit PSI's website or call PSI to schedule at an approved testing center in Connecticut.
Step 4: Submit Your License Application
After passing both exam sections, submit your application to CREC through the DCP portal: - Completed application form - Proof of pre-license education completion - Proof of passing exam scores - Application fee - Sponsoring broker information (you must have a sponsoring broker to activate your license)
Your license is inactive until a broker sponsors you.
Step 5: Have a Sponsoring Broker Activate Your License
Your salesperson license cannot be used until a licensed Connecticut broker activates it. You work under the supervision of your sponsoring broker and cannot operate independently.
Step 6: License Renewal and Continuing Education
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years, on your birthday
- CE requirement: 12 hours of approved continuing education per renewal cycle
- CE must include: Fair housing, agency, and other DCP-mandated topics
If you fail to renew on time, your license lapses. You may be able to reinstate a lapsed license within a grace period, but additional fees and CE may apply.
Connecticut License Reciprocity
Connecticut has reciprocity agreements with certain states. If you hold an active license in a reciprocal state, you may be able to obtain a Connecticut license without retaking the national portion of the exam. Check the CREC website for current reciprocal states, as this list changes.
