Kansas Real Estate License Requirements (2025)

Step-by-step guide to getting your Kansas real estate salesperson license — education, exam, application, and renewal requirements explained.

Kansas has one of the most accessible real estate licensing paths in the country, with only 30 hours of required prelicense education. Here's everything you need to know about getting and keeping your Kansas salesperson license.

Step 1: Meet Basic Eligibility

To apply for a Kansas salesperson license:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Pass a background check (criminal history reviewed by KREC)

Step 2: Complete Prelicense Education

Kansas requires only 30 hours of approved prelicense coursework — one of the lowest requirements in the United States. Coursework must be from a KREC-approved school and cover both national real estate principles and Kansas-specific law under Chapter 58, Article 30.

Courses are available in-person and online. After completion, you'll receive a certificate to register for the PSI exam.

Step 3: Pass the PSI Salesperson Exam

  • 80 national questions — 70% passing (56 correct)
  • 30 state questions — 70% passing (21 correct)
  • Time limit: 3 hours

Both sections must be passed independently. Failed sections can be retaken separately within your eligibility window.

Step 4: Submit Your License Application

After passing the exam, apply to KREC for your salesperson license. You'll need:

  • Completed application form
  • Application fee
  • PSI exam results (sent directly from PSI to KREC)
  • Background check disclosure
  • Sponsoring broker information

A licensed Kansas broker must sponsor your application. Without a sponsoring broker, your license is inactive and you cannot practice.

Step 5: Activate Your License

Your salesperson license becomes active when affiliated with a licensed Kansas broker. Leaving a brokerage without immediately affiliating with a new broker places your license on inactive status.

License Renewal

Kansas salesperson licenses renew every 2 years. Renewal requirements:

  • 12 hours of CE per 2-year cycle
  • CE must be from KREC-approved providers
  • Online renewal through the KREC portal

Kansas's 12-hour CE requirement is relatively low. The 2-year renewal cycle means you'll renew more frequently than states with 3-year cycles.

Kansas Broker License

After gaining experience and completing additional broker education, Kansas salespersons can upgrade to a broker license. A broker license allows you to open your own brokerage or supervise other salespersons.

KREC Disciplinary Process

KREC can suspend, revoke, or refuse renewal of licenses for:

  • Misrepresentation or fraud
  • Commingling client funds
  • Violating brokerage relationship duties
  • Failure to complete CE requirements
