Here's the complete process to get your Alabama real estate salesperson license in 2025.
Eligibility
- At least 19 years old (Alabama requires 19, not 18)
- High school diploma or equivalent
- U.S. citizen or lawfully admitted alien
- Good moral character; criminal history reviewed case-by-case
Step 1: Complete 60 Hours of Prelicense Education
Complete 60 hours of AREC-approved prelicense education covering: - Alabama real estate law (Title 34, Chapter 27) - Real estate principles and practices - Agency relationships and disclosures - Contracts and closings
Cost: $200-$400 online or classroom
Step 2: Apply to AREC
Apply through AREC's online portal: - Application fee: $150 - Background check required - Disclosure of criminal history
Step 3: Pass the Exam
Schedule through PSI: - 140 questions (100 national + 40 Alabama) - 4 hours - 70% passing (98/140) - Exam fee: $75
Step 4: Activate with a Qualifying Broker
Your license is inactive until sponsored by a licensed Alabama qualifying broker. The broker submits activation paperwork to AREC.
Renewal
Alabama licenses renew annually (unusual — most states are 2-year). Continuing education: 15 hours per year, including 3 hours of risk management.
