How Long Should You Study for the Indiana Real Estate Exam?

Find out how many hours to study for the Indiana PSI real estate exam and how to build a study plan that gets you to a passing score.

Indiana requires 90 hours of prelicense coursework before you can sit for the PSI salesperson exam. But course hours and actual exam prep are two different things. Here's how to structure your study time for maximum results.

How Many Study Hours Do You Need?

Most candidates need 40–80 hours of dedicated exam prep beyond their prelicense course. The range varies based on:

  • How recently you completed your prelicense coursework
  • Whether your school covered state-specific content thoroughly
  • Your test-taking experience and baseline reading comprehension

If your course ended more than a month ago, plan for the higher end of that range. Memory fades quickly, and the Indiana state section requires precise recall of specific rules and numbers.

The Indiana-Specific Study Gap

Many prelicense courses are designed to help you complete the 90-hour requirement, not specifically to pass the PSI exam. That means state-specific content — IREC composition, trust account timing, seller disclosure requirements, and license renewal rules — may be covered briefly.

Plan to spend at least 15–20 hours on Indiana state content alone, regardless of how much time your course devoted to it.

A 4-Week Study Plan

Week 1: National Content Review - Property ownership, land use, finance fundamentals - Agency law, contracts, transfer of title - Take a full diagnostic practice exam to identify weak areas

Week 2: State Content Deep Dive - IREC structure and Indiana Code Title 25, Article 34.1 - Trust account rules (24-hour deposit from broker receipt) - Seller's Residential Real Estate Sales Disclosure - Agency disclosure timing and dual agency rules - License renewal (3-year cycle, birthday-based) and CE (12 hours) - Indiana fair housing additions (ancestry, marital status)

Week 3: Mixed Practice - Daily 30-question quizzes mixing national and state - Review every wrong answer immediately - Timed section practice (80 questions in 2 hours, 50 questions in 2 hours)

Week 4: Full Exam Simulation - Take 2–3 full 130-question practice exams under timed conditions - Focus final days on your weakest topic areas - Stop studying the day before; rest and review only key facts
