Indiana Real Estate License Requirements (2025)

Everything you need to get your Indiana real estate salesperson license: education, exam, application, and renewal requirements.

Getting your Indiana real estate salesperson license involves meeting education requirements, passing the PSI exam, and completing your application through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA). Here's a complete step-by-step breakdown.

Step 1: Meet Basic Eligibility Requirements

To apply for an Indiana salesperson license, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawfully admitted alien
  • Have no felony convictions (certain convictions may be reviewed by IREC)

Step 2: Complete Prelicense Education

Indiana requires 90 hours of approved prelicense coursework from an IREC-approved school. The coursework covers both national real estate principles and Indiana-specific law under Indiana Code Title 25, Article 34.1.

Courses are available in-person and online. Completion of the 90 hours makes you eligible to schedule the PSI exam.

Step 3: Pass the PSI Salesperson Exam

The exam consists of:

  • 80 national questions — 75% passing (60 correct)
  • 50 state questions — 75% passing (38 correct)
  • Time limit: 4 hours

Both sections must be passed independently. If you fail one section, you only need to retake that section (subject to scheduling and fee rules).

Step 4: Complete Your License Application

After passing the exam, apply for your license through the IPLA online portal. You'll need to:

  • Submit the application with the required fee
  • Provide proof of exam passage (PSI sends results directly)
  • Provide your criminal history disclosure
  • Have your sponsoring managing broker sign the application

A licensed Indiana managing broker must sponsor you before your license is activated.

Step 5: License Activation

Your salesperson license is active only when affiliated with a licensed managing broker. Working without a sponsoring broker — or after a broker affiliation ends — means your license is on inactive status and you cannot practice.

License Renewal

Indiana salesperson licenses renew every 3 years on the licensee's birthday. To renew, you must complete:

  • 12 hours of continuing education per 3-year cycle
  • CE must include IREC-approved topics
  • Renewal is completed through the IPLA online portal

Managing Broker License

After two years as an active salesperson and completion of additional education, Indiana salespersons can upgrade to a managing broker license, which allows them to open their own brokerage.
