New Jersey requires 75 hours of pre-license education — one of the more substantial requirements in the country. But completing those 75 hours is not enough on its own. Additional self-study is essential before sitting for the PSI exam.
The Baseline: 40 to 80 Additional Hours
After completing the NJ 75-hour pre-license course, most candidates need an additional 40 to 80 hours of focused self-study. Candidates with a background in law, finance, or real estate can often get ready in 40 hours. Those new to the field should plan for 60 to 80 hours.
That translates to: - 2 hours per day for 4 to 5 weeks, or - 3 to 4 hours per day for 2 to 3 weeks if you want a more compressed schedule
Spaced repetition over several weeks is more effective than cramming. Plan your study sessions well before your scheduled exam date.
Suggested Week-by-Week Schedule
Week 1 — National Fundamentals - Review property ownership, land use, and valuation from your 75-hour course - Do 60 national practice questions per day - Focus on key vocabulary: liens, encumbrances, easements, types of deeds
Week 2 — Financing and Contracts - Study mortgage types, RESPA, TILA, and amortization - Review contract law: valid elements, contingencies, remedies - Do 75 practice questions mixing national topics
Week 3 — New Jersey State Law - NJREC structure: 9 members, under Division of Consumer Affairs, Dept of Law & Public Safety - Realty Transfer Fee: seller pays, two-tier rate - 1% mansion tax: buyer pays on $1M+ - Attorney review period: 3 business days - Written buyer broker agreement requirement - NJ fair housing additions: marital status, domestic partnership, civil union, sexual orientation, gender identity - Do 50 NJ state practice questions
Week 4 — Full Practice Exams - Take two or three timed 110-question practice exams - Review every wrong answer — understand why, not just what the right answer is - Target 78% or above consistently before scheduling your exam date
