New Mexico Real Estate Exam Day Tips
Practical tips for exam day on the New Mexico PSI real estate exam — what to bring, how to manage 3.5 hours, state section strategy, and what to do after you test.
New Mexico Real Estate Exam Day Tips
The New Mexico PSI exam is longer than most state real estate exams — 130 questions in 3.5 hours. With a 75% passing threshold, every question matters. These exam day tips will help you perform at your best.
What to Bring
PSI testing centers require two forms of identification:
- Primary ID: Government-issued photo ID with your signature (driver's license, passport, state ID)
- Secondary ID: Any document with your name (credit card, debit card, or another government ID)
- Names on both IDs must match your exam registration exactly
Do NOT bring: cell phone, smartwatch, calculator, notes, textbooks, or study materials. PSI provides scratch paper and pencils. Lockers or storage areas are available for personal items.
Arrive at least 30 minutes early. Late arrivals are typically turned away and forfeit their exam fee.
Time Management for 130 Questions
With 3.5 hours and 130 questions, you have approximately 97 seconds per question on average. That is slightly more breathing room than a typical 120-question/3-hour exam, but the 75% threshold means you cannot afford to rush and make careless errors.
Recommended approach:
- Move through all 130 questions at a steady pace
- Spend no more than 90 seconds on any question on the first pass
- Flag uncertain questions and return to them after completing all 130
- Use process of elimination — remove clearly wrong choices before selecting an answer
- Never leave a question blank — there is no penalty for guessing
State Section Strategy (Questions 81 to 130)
The 50-question state section comes after the 80-question national section. Fatigue can become a factor. Pace yourself on the national section so you have full mental energy for the state portion.

- Sleep 7 to 8 hours
- Eat a substantial breakfast on exam morning
After the Exam
PSI delivers results immediately after you complete the test. A pass gives you documentation to submit with your NMREC license application. A fail gives you a diagnostic report by content area — use it to plan a targeted retake.
