# North Dakota Real Estate License Requirements: Step-by-Step

Earning a North Dakota real estate salesperson license involves completing pre-license education, passing the PSI exam, and meeting NDREC application requirements. Here is the complete process.

Step 1: Meet Basic Eligibility Requirements

To apply for a North Dakota salesperson license, you must: - Be at least 18 years old - Have a high school diploma or equivalent - Be a United States citizen or lawfully admitted alien - Have no disqualifying criminal history (NDREC reviews applications case by case)

Step 2: Complete 90 Hours of Pre-License Education

North Dakota requires 90 hours of real estate pre-license education from an NDREC-approved school. The coursework covers: - Real estate principles and practices - North Dakota license law and NDREC rules - Real estate finance - Contracts and closing procedures - Fair housing and agency

You must complete your education before scheduling the state exam. Keep your certificate of completion — you will need it with your license application.

Step 3: Pass the PSI Exam

Schedule your exam through PSI at a testing center in Bismarck, Fargo, or another approved location. The exam consists of: - 80 national questions - 50 North Dakota state questions - 3.5 hours total testing time - 75% passing score required on each section independently

If you fail one section, you only need to retake that section. Results are given immediately after the exam.

Step 4: Complete a Background Check

Submit fingerprints for a criminal background check through the NDREC's designated vendor. Any prior criminal history does not automatically disqualify you, but the NDREC will review the circumstances and may require additional documentation.

Step 5: Submit Your License Application

Applications are submitted to the NDREC. You will need: - Proof of completed pre-license education - PSI exam score report - Background check results - Application fee (check current fee schedule on the NDREC website) - Sponsoring broker information — you must be affiliated with a licensed North Dakota broker before your license is active

Step 6: Activate Your License Under a Broker

Your salesperson license is inactive until a licensed North Dakota broker sponsors you. Your broker submits an affiliation form to the NDREC. Once approved, your license is active and you may begin practicing.

License Renewal

Licenses renew every two years. You must complete 9 hours of continuing education, including mandatory topics set by the NDREC, before renewal. First-time renewals may have additional education requirements.

Reciprocity

North Dakota has reciprocity agreements with several states. If you hold a license in a reciprocal state, you may be eligible to obtain a North Dakota license by completing only the state portion of the exam.
