Oregon Real Estate Exam Day Tips: What to Expect at PSI
Everything you need to know about exam day for the Oregon broker exam: what to bring, PSI rules, time management, and how to handle difficult questions.
Know the Logistics Before Exam Day
The Oregon real estate broker exam is administered by PSI at testing centers throughout Oregon, including locations in Portland, Salem, Eugene, Bend, and Medford. Schedule your exam through PSI's online portal at least a few days in advance — popular time slots fill quickly.
Confirm your testing center address and allow extra travel time. Arriving late may result in forfeiture of your exam fee and require rescheduling.
What to Bring
PSI requires two forms of identification:
- Primary ID: A valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport). The name must exactly match the name on your PSI registration.
- Secondary ID: A second form of ID with your name (credit card, employee ID, etc.)
Do not bring: cell phones, calculators (PSI provides an on-screen calculator), study notes, food or drinks (unless medically necessary), or any electronic devices.
What to Expect at the Testing Center
Upon arrival, you will be required to:
- Present both forms of ID
- Sign in digitally
- Have your photograph and palm vein scan taken (biometric check-in)
- Store all personal belongings in a provided locker
You will be escorted to a testing station. The exam environment is monitored by cameras and a proctor. Raise your hand if you have a technical issue — do not attempt to fix it yourself.
Exam Structure and Timing
The Oregon broker exam has 130 questions with a 3-hour time limit:
- 80 national questions
- 50 Oregon state questions
You have approximately 83 seconds per question on average. Most candidates find the time sufficient if they do not dwell on difficult questions.
The exam is delivered on a computer. You can flag questions for review and return to them before submitting. Use this feature strategically.
Time Management Strategy
First pass: Move through all 130 questions answering what you know confidently. Flag anything uncertain. Target spending no more than 60 seconds on questions you answer in the first pass.
Second pass: Return to flagged questions. With remaining time, reason through them using process of elimination.
Third pass (if time allows): Review flagged questions one more time. Change answers only if you have a specific reason — first instincts are often correct.
Aim to complete the first pass in under 90 minutes, leaving at least 45–60 minutes for review.
Process of Elimination
When you are unsure of an answer:
- Eliminate obviously wrong choices first — most questions have at least one clearly incorrect option
- Look for absolute language (always, never, only) — these are often wrong
- Look for the most complete and specific answer
- When two answers seem similar, choose the one that is more precise or includes the regulatory reference
Oregon-Specific Questions
State section questions often involve scenarios. Read carefully — the question may hinge on a specific Oregon detail (is the property 1-4 units? is this a broker or principal broker? was the Agency Disclosure provided at first substantial contact?). Oregon's unique licensing structure means some answer choices that would be correct in other states (e.g., "salesperson license") are wrong in Oregon.
After the Exam
PSI delivers results immediately on screen at the testing center. You will receive a printed score report.
If you pass: OREA will be notified by PSI. You can then submit your license application through OREA's online system. You do not automatically receive a license — you must still complete the application, submit fees, and affiliate with a principal broker.
If you fail: Your score report will include a diagnostic breakdown by content area. Use it to focus your retake prep. You may retake after 24 hours. There is no limit on retakes within your two-year window.
