How Long Should You Study for the Oregon Real Estate Exam?
Oregon requires 150 pre-license hours and has a 50-question state section. Find out how many weeks to study, how to build a study plan, and when to schedule your exam.
The Baseline: 150 Hours of Coursework
Oregon requires 150 hours of approved pre-license education before you can sit for the broker exam. This is one of the higher requirements nationally and reflects the breadth of Oregon-specific content you need to know.
Most candidates complete coursework in 8–16 weeks depending on whether they study full-time or part-time. Online courses allow you to move at your own pace; in-person classes run on a fixed schedule.
Do not treat the 150 hours as just a requirement to check off. The coursework is your primary study resource. Engage actively — take notes, complete practice quizzes, and review weak areas before moving forward.
After Coursework: Dedicated Exam Prep
Once you finish coursework, most successful candidates spend 2–4 additional weeks on dedicated exam prep before scheduling the PSI exam. This phase should include:
- Daily practice questions — aim for 50–100 questions per day
- Targeted review — focus on areas where your practice scores are lowest
- Oregon-specific drilling — OREA authority, agency disclosure, land use planning, fair housing additions, deed of trust process
- Timed full-length practice exams — simulate the 3-hour PSI format
Recommended Study Timeline
Weeks 1–10 (or per your course schedule): Complete all 150 hours of pre-license coursework. Do not skip ahead. The state section content (especially land use planning) is dense and needs multiple exposures.
Weeks 11–12: Begin dedicated exam prep. Complete 300–400 practice questions. Review all wrong answers. Read the PSI Oregon candidate handbook to understand content outlines and logistics.
Weeks 13–14: Complete 2–3 full-length timed practice exams. Aim for 80%+ on practice exams before scheduling your actual test. Drill Oregon-specific topics: agency disclosure form, seller's property disclosure, urban growth boundaries, ORS Chapter 696.
Schedule the exam for the end of week 14 or early week 15 — while the material is fresh and your practice scores are strong.
Warning: The Two-Year Clock
Your school's certificate of completion is valid for two years. If you do not pass the exam within two years of finishing coursework, you must retake the 150 hours before testing again. Do not let the clock run out — study efficiently and schedule promptly.
How to Know When You Are Ready
A reliable benchmark: consistently scoring 78–82% on full-length practice exams across multiple sessions, with no single content area below 65%. If your Oregon-specific practice scores are weak (below 65%), spend another week on state content before scheduling.
Do not schedule the exam too early just to get it done. Paying a retake fee and losing another 2–3 weeks of prep time costs more than one extra week of focused study.
Signs You Need More Prep Time
- Scoring below 70% on practice exams
- Unable to explain Oregon's agency disclosure requirements from memory
- Unfamiliar with urban growth boundaries or OREA Commissioner authority
- Math section practice scores below 60%
A Final Note on Scheduling
PSI has testing centers in Portland, Salem, Eugene, and other locations. Schedule at least a few days in advance — popular time slots fill up, especially near the end of the month. Confirm the testing center address, what ID you need, and what is prohibited in the testing room.
