# Virginia Real Estate Exam Day Tips

Virginia's real estate exam is 120 questions in 150 minutes — giving you just 75 seconds per question on average. This time pressure makes exam-day strategy just as important as content knowledge.

Before You Arrive

Verify your PSI location. Virginia has PSI testing centers in Richmond, Virginia Beach, Roanoke, Northern Virginia, and other cities. Confirm the exact address when you schedule.

Bring two forms of ID. Government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport) plus a secondary ID. Both must show your legal name exactly as registered with PSI.

Arrive 30 minutes early. Late arrivals may be turned away without a refund. Virginia testing centers in urban areas like Northern Virginia and Virginia Beach can have parking challenges — plan ahead.

Leave all materials outside. No phones, notes, or electronics in the testing area. PSI provides lockers.

At Check-In

PSI staff will photograph you, verify your IDs, and escort you to the testing room. An on-screen calculator is provided. Scratch paper or an erasable board will be available for math work.

During the Exam — Time Management Is Critical

Set a pace target. With 75 seconds per question, check the question count every 25-30 questions to ensure you are on pace. If you are falling behind, stop deliberating on hard questions — guess confidently, flag them, and move on.

Never spend more than 90 seconds on one question. If you cannot confidently answer within 90 seconds, choose your best option, flag it, and proceed. Return if time allows.

Answer every question. Virginia's exam has no penalty for wrong answers. An unanswered question is guaranteed zero; a guess gives you a 25% chance.

Read questions completely but efficiently. Look for qualifiers (always, never, most, except) before reading the answer choices. These words often point directly to the correct answer.

State section strategy: Virginia's 40 state questions focus heavily on Standard Agency, Residential Property Disclosure, and HOA/condo packets. If you know these topics well, the state section should feel manageable even under time pressure.

After the Exam

Results display on-screen immediately after you complete both sections.

If you pass: Take your score report and complete your DPOR application promptly. Do not wait — score reports may have expiration periods.

If you fail the state section: This is the most common failure mode.
