Washington Real Estate Exam Day Tips
What to expect on exam day at a PSI testing center in Washington, including what to bring, time management strategies, and last-minute review priorities.
Washington Real Estate Exam Day Tips
The Washington real estate broker exam is administered by PSI at testing centers throughout the state, including locations in Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, Bellevue, and other cities. Here is everything you need to know for exam day.
What to Bring
- Two forms of valid government-issued ID. The primary ID must have your photo and signature (driver's license, passport, or state ID). The name must exactly match what you used when registering with PSI.
- Your PSI confirmation number (digital or printed)
- Do NOT bring: notes, textbooks, phones, calculators (PSI provides an on-screen calculator), or food
Arriving at the Testing Center
Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. PSI is strict about late arrivals — arriving after your appointment time may result in forfeiture of your exam fee. Check-in involves palm vein scanning or fingerprinting and a locker for your personal items.
Exam Structure and Time Management
The exam has 130 questions and you have 3 hours 30 minutes. That works out to approximately 1 minute and 37 seconds per question — more than enough time for most candidates.
Recommended time allocation: - National section (80 questions): Aim to finish in 90 minutes, leaving 2 minutes per question - State section (50 questions): Spend the remaining 60-70 minutes here - Review: Use any remaining time to review flagged questions
The PSI system allows you to flag questions for review and skip ahead. Use this feature — do not spend more than 2 minutes on any single question without flagging it and moving on.
Last-Minute Review Priorities for Washington
The night before, do a quick review of these high-yield Washington topics:
- Agency disclosure timing: first meeting with a party
- Form 17 delivery (5 days) and buyer rescission (3 business days)
- Earnest money held by closing agent — not the broker
- REET graduated rate tiers and who pays (seller)
- Broker vs. Managing Broker vs. Designated Broker distinctions
- Washington's additional fair housing protected classes (military status, gender identity, sexual orientation)
- Net listing prohibition
Managing Exam Anxiety
The Washington exam's ~50% pass rate creates anxiety for many candidates. Keep these facts in mind:
- You have already completed 90 hours of pre-license education
- The exam is scored on national and state sections independently — you do not need a perfect score, just 70% on each
- Most questions are multiple choice with one clearly correct answer
- If you have been scoring above 75% on practice exams, you are likely ready
If you fail a section, you can retake that section without repeating the other. PSI allows retakes after a waiting period. Stay calm, work methodically, and trust your preparation.
