Iowa Real Estate Exam Day Tips: How to Show Up Ready
Practical exam day advice for the Iowa PSI real estate salesperson exam — what to bring, how to manage time, and last-minute Iowa facts to review.
The Iowa PSI salesperson exam is 120 questions in 3 hours. That's tighter than most candidates expect. Here's how to prepare for exam day so you can focus on the questions, not the logistics.
Before Exam Day
Confirm your PSI test center. Iowa has PSI centers in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Sioux City, and other locations. Confirm the address and parking the day before — don't rely on memory.
Know what to bring: - Two valid IDs — primary must be government-issued with photo and signature (driver's license, passport, state ID) - Secondary ID with your name (credit card, work ID) - Your PSI confirmation number
What to leave behind: - Study materials (not allowed in the testing room) - Phone (stored in a locker provided by PSI) - Food and drinks (water may be permitted — check PSI's current policy)
At the Testing Center
Arrive 30 minutes early. PSI's check-in process includes ID verification, a palm vein scan, and brief orientation. Late arrivals may forfeit their exam fee.
The testing software includes an on-screen calculator — use it instead of mental math. A brief tutorial is offered before the exam begins; don't skip it.
Time Management
3 hours for 120 questions = 1 minute 30 seconds per question. This is tighter than Indiana's exam. Pacing discipline is critical.
Strategy: 1. Answer every question you're confident about on the first pass 2. Flag anything you're unsure of and move on immediately 3. After the first pass, return to flagged questions 4. Save 10 minutes at the end for a final review 5. Never leave a question blank — no penalty for guessing
Handling Hard Questions
- Eliminate obviously wrong answers first — even eliminating one option improves your odds
- Beware of "always" and "never" — these absolute qualifiers are often wrong
- For Iowa-specific questions: think about what makes Iowa unique (buyer agency agreement, 36 CE hours, IREC structure, fair housing additions)
- Go with your first instinct — second-guessing on exam questions is usually harmful
Last-Minute Iowa Facts to Review
Before walking into the exam, have these memorized:
- 120 questions (80 national + 40 state), 70% passing each section, 3 hours
- 60 hours prelicense; 36 CE hours per 3-year renewal cycle
- IREC: 5 members under Iowa PLB
- Mandatory written buyer agency agreement — required BEFORE any buyer services
- Iowa fair housing additions: sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, source of income
- Seller's Disclosure: required for 1-4 unit residential, before or at contract signing
- Iowa is NOT a community property state and is a lien theory state
After the Exam
PSI delivers preliminary pass/fail results at the testing center immediately after you finish. If you pass both sections, you'll receive documentation to apply through the Iowa PLB.
If you fail one section, your score report shows which content areas need work — use it to target your retake prep.
