How Long to Study for the Maryland Real Estate Exam

Most candidates who pass the Maryland real estate exam on the first attempt study for 4 to 8 weeks after completing their 60-hour pre-license course. Candidates with legal or financial backgrounds may need less time. Candidates with no prior real estate knowledge often need 6–8 weeks.

Why the Pre-License Course Isn't Enough on Its Own

Maryland's 60-hour pre-license course covers the fundamentals, but passing the PSI exam requires a deeper level of recall than most courses deliver. The state section — 30 questions on Maryland law — covers the Intra-Company Agent designation, Transfer Tax rates, the Lead Paint Risk Reduction Act, and agency disclosure rules that are frequently missed by candidates who only review national prep materials.

Recommended Study Hours

| Background | Recommended Study Time After Pre-License | |---|---| | No real estate background | 60–80 additional hours | | Business or legal background | 40–60 additional hours | | Prior license or RE experience | 20–40 additional hours |
