Tennessee Real Estate Exam Day Tips
What to expect at the PSI testing center for the Tennessee real estate exam, plus strategies for managing your time and answering questions confidently.
# Tennessee Real Estate Exam Day Tips
The Tennessee real estate exam is 4 hours and 120 questions. Smart test-day preparation and strategy can make the difference between passing and scheduling a retake.
Before Exam Day
Confirm your PSI testing location. Tennessee has PSI testing centers in Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga, and other cities. Verify the address when you schedule — do not assume.
Prepare your ID. PSI requires two forms of ID: one government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport) and one secondary ID. Both must show your full legal name exactly as it appears on your registration. A name mismatch can prevent you from testing.
Arrive 30 minutes early. Late arrivals may be turned away and forfeit their exam fee. Account for traffic and parking.
Do not bring study materials. No phones, notes, books, or electronic devices are permitted in the testing area. PSI provides secure lockers.
At the Testing Center
PSI staff will photograph you and verify your IDs. You will sign in, leave all belongings in a locker, and be escorted to the testing room. An on-screen calculator is provided — no need to bring your own.
The exam is split into two sections: national (80 questions) and state (40 questions). You can typically flag questions and return to them within each section.
During the Exam
Pace yourself. With 4 hours for 120 questions, you have 2 minutes per question. Do not spend more than 2-3 minutes on any single question — flag it and move on.
Read every word. PSI questions often include qualifiers — "always," "never," "most likely," "except." These words change the answer. Read the entire question before looking at the choices.
Answer every question. There is no penalty for wrong answers. A blank answer is always wrong; a guess has a 25% chance of being correct.
Trust your first instinct on difficult questions. Research consistently shows that test-takers who change answers from their first instinct are wrong more often than right.
Prioritize the state section. Tennessee's 40-question state section is where many candidates lose points. If you feel confident on national content, give the state section careful attention.
After the Exam
PSI delivers results on-screen immediately. If you pass both sections, your score report is your documentation for the TREC application. If you fail one section, the report indicates which one and which content areas cost you points.
If you need a retake, schedule it quickly while the material is fresh. Use the content area feedback to focus your review, not just general re-studying.
